Getting Around Chicago

Public Transportation

The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) operates the nation’s second largest public transportation system. On an average weekday, 1.6 million rides are taken on CTA. The CTA is a regional transit system that serves 35 suburbs, in addition to the City of Chicago, and provides 81 percent of the public transit trips in the six-county Chicago metropolitan area either with direct service or connecting service to Metra and Pace.

CTA has 1,864 buses that operate 129 routes and 1,536 route miles. Buses make about 19,237 trips a day and serve 10,768 bus stops.

On the rapid transit system, CTA’s 1,492 rail cars operate eight routes and 224.1 miles of track. CTA trains make about 2,318 trips each day and serve 145 stations.

Chicago is one of the few cities in the world that has rail service to two major airports. CTA’s Blue Line ‘L’ can take customers to O’Hare International Airport. Orange Line trains, which operate clockwise on the Loop ‘L’ structure, travel to Midway Airport.

CTA also provides around-the-clock service on certain routes. During late night and early morning hours, major rail lines and some of CTA’s bus routes offer “Night Owl” service, much of it with connecting schedules and routing.

Riding on the CTA can be done with the purchase of a Ventra card.  Ventra Cards are hard plastic cards that you can use on the CTA.   Each card comes with its own transit account, in which you store transit value (for regular fares) and passes (such as a 1-Day, 3-Day or 7-Day unlimited ride pass).  Ventra cards can be purchased on the Ventra Website : https://www.ventrachicago.com/,  at a Ventra vending machine found at CTA "L" stations, at O'Hare and Midway Airports.

Fare information for CTA can be found on their website: https://www.transitchicago.com/fares/

Taxi Services

Taxis are plentiful and easy to hail downtown, at the airports and throughout many Chicago neighborhoods. You can also electronically hail (E-Hail) a taxicab through a mobile app. CHICABS offers safe and secure options for a Chicago taxicab ride. CHICABS approved apps ARRO and CURB also let passengers electronically pay (E-Pay) for the taxicab fare through the app.

Credit cards are accepted in all taxi cabs by city mandate. It is standard to tip the driver about 15-20% of the fare, plus $1-2 per bag if the driver helps you with luggage. Please note that all fares and taxes are subject to change; visit the City of Chicago website for additional taxicab passenger information.

Sample taxi fare between downtown and O'Hare Airport is $40-50, and between Midway Airport is $30-35 (tip not included).

Fares

Taxis charge a base rate of $3.25, plus $2.25 for each additional mile and $0.20 for every 36 seconds of time elapsed.

If a gas surcharge is in effect, a sign will be displayed inside the taxicab and a surcharge may apply. Tolls are an extra charge. Taxis charge $1 for the first additional passenger over age 12 and under age 65; each additional passenger after that is $0.50.

Rideshare Services

Lyft is an on-demand, peer to peer, ridesharing service that connects passengers who need a ride with available drivers in the community. Lyft's tagline is "your friend with a car" as the drivers use their own personal cars for picking up passengers. Lyft cars are available to be hailed through the Lyft smartphone app. Once a Lyft driver is requested through the Lyft app, the rider will be able to track their driver through the app and will receive a notification when their ride has arrived! The app provides a cashless payment process by charging all Lyft rides to an on file credit card attached to your account.

Please Note:  Lyft enacts prime time surge pricing during peak travel times. If prime time pricing is in effect, Lyft will always notify you before you request.

Uber is the largest (and most well known) on-demand car service in the world. The Uber app allows users to request a ride via their Android or iPhone. Once a driver is signaled through the app, it usually takes less than 10 minutes for a car to arrive at your door. During this brief wait period, Uber allows you to track the car's location so you know exactly when to expect its arrival. The app provides a cashless payment process by charging all Uber rides to an on file credit card attached to your account.

Please Note: Uber enacts surge pricing during peak travel times.  If surge pricing is in effect, Uber will always notify you before you request.
